Italian Easter Bread

Baker Pippi’s Easter Bread. She makes it every year and it is a family tradition for many generations. You can start your family tradition this Easter… Do not boil the eggs first, you may color them but do not cook, they will cook in the oven

all-purpose flour 2 and 1/2 cups

sugar 1/2 cup

salt 1 teaspoon

dry active yeast 2 teaspoons

warm milk 2/3 cup

butter 2 tablespoons

eggs 2

6 whole eggs, dyed

butter 2 additional tablespoons for brushing the dough before it goes in the oven

Spring Nonpareils Spinkles

In a Kitchen Aide add warm milk and yeast and let sit for ten minutes. Add 1 cup of flour, sugar, salt, and softened or melted butter. Start the Kitchen Aid with the hook on low and add 1 egg at a time. Continue mixing it and add 1/2 a cup of flour at a time.

Flour a clean working surface and knead the dough. Add to a bowl sprayed with canola cooking spray. Add dough and cover with wet paper towel for 1 hour to rise.

Cut your dough into 2 equal sections and roll into 1 and 1/2 inch thickness. Braid the dough into a circle that eventually you will connect the two ends.  Place one colored egg in the center of the bread, make sure the dough surrounding the egg is touching it. Then open five breads and place the eggs into those additional areas. Place the dough on a sprayed cookie sheet and cover with a damp paper towel. Let this double in size, roughly 45 minutes. Turn oven to 350 degrees. With the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter melt and brush the bread. Sprinkle the dough lightly with the Spring Sprinkles. Bake for 50-55 minutes. Enjoy!
